John and Leslie Needham moved to Bedford in 1990, attracted by the rural qualities they couldn’t believe existed so close to New York City. “We didn’t know at the time how much hard work it takes by dedicated people to prevent the overdevelopment that has ravaged other suburbs,” says John. “Nobody works harder than staff of the Mianus Gorge to ensure that future generations will enjoy pristine forests, fresh air, clean drinking water, and abundant wildlife.”
As a board member, Needham draws on his business experience and longtime interest in land conservation. “Being on this board is one of the greatest privileges of my lifetime. I’ve learned so much about good non-profit governance in the company of people I highly admire.” More than 30 years later, John and Leslie and their three adult daughters still love Bedford for its rural qualities.
